この日は、ヒースローのホテルからロンドン中心部にある
マーブル・アーチ・ホテルへ移動しました。
途中、パディントン駅で降りて、駅構内にあるパディントンの銅像を見つけ、
写真を撮ったりもしました。
時間はあまりなかったので駆け足でしたが、V&A博物館にも立ち寄りました。
中でも印象に残っているのが、イスラム美術のセクションです。
足を踏み入れた瞬間、「わーっ！」と声が出そうになりました。
私は昔、University of Victoriaで美術史を専攻していて、
一番のお気に入りがイスラム美術でした。
展示室に入るとすぐに、教科書で見たことのあるような
クーフィー体の装飾が施されたお皿が目に入りました。
そして、渡航前にYouTubeで見て楽しみにしていた特大のカーペットも。
薄暗いライティングの中で広がるその空間は、とても幻想的で、
「ここで寝ころんだら気持ちがいいだろうな」と思ってしまいました。
もちろん実際のカーペットはガラスの壁でぐるりと囲まれていて、
触れることはできないのですが。
昔、大好きだったイスラム美術。
なじみのある作品を目にしながら、
かつて胸を躍らせていた自分の気持ちがよみがえり、とても懐かしい気分になりました。
On this day, we moved from our hotel near Heathrow to a hotel near Marble Arch in Central London.
On the way, we stopped at Paddington Station, where I found the Paddington Bear statue inside the station and took a few photos.
We didn’t have much time, so it was a quick visit, but we also managed to go to the V&A Museum.
What stayed with me most was the Islamic Art section. The moment I stepped inside, I almost said, “Wow.”
Years ago, I majored in Art History at the University of Victoria, and Islamic art was my favorite field of study.
As soon as I entered the gallery, I saw a plate decorated with Kufic script — just like the ones I remembered from my textbooks. And there it was: the enormous carpet I had watched on YouTube before coming, the one I had been looking forward to seeing in person.
The gallery was dimly lit, creating a calm and almost dreamlike atmosphere. For a moment, I thought how wonderful it would feel to lie down on that carpet. Of course, the real carpet is completely enclosed by glass walls, so touching it — let alone lying on it — is impossible.
Islamic art was something I once loved deeply.
Seeing these familiar works brought back the excitement I used to feel, and I was filled with a gentle sense of nostalgia.
