ロンドン塔
この日のいちばん大きなイベントは、Tower of London を訪れたことでした。
名前は「タワー（塔）」ですが、私が思い浮かべるような塔には見えません。むしろ要塞という感じで、実際にもそういう雰囲気です。
いちばん印象に残ったのは、Lady Jane Grey の話です。
彼女はとても若くして女王になりましたが、その在位はわずか9日間でした。だから 「9日間の女王」 と呼ばれています。
Mary I of England が女王として宣言されたあと、ジェーン・グレイはロンドン塔に幽閉されました。そしておよそ7か月後, 夫の処刑のあと、同じ日に処刑されました。
まだ 16歳 だったそうです。とても悲しい話です。
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese でランチ
ロンドン塔のあと、Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese まで歩いてランチを食べに行きました。
名前は Cheshire Cat（Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland に出てくるチェシャ猫）とは関係ないのですが、座っているときも、ついあのにやっと笑うチェシャ猫のことを思い出していました。
食事はとてもおいしかったです。
ただ、私の後ろに座っていた人（たぶん大きな男性）がとても楽しそうに動いていて、友達と盛り上がっていたみたいです。食事がおいしいので気持ちはわかるのですが、そのたびに私の椅子も動いてしまいました。
というのも、実際には背もたれの仕切りがある同じベンチに座っていたからです。
それでも、とても楽しいランチでした。
Tower of London
The biggest event of the day was visiting the Tower of London. It says “tower,” but it doesn’t really look like the kind of tower I imagine. It is actually a fortress, and it really looks like one.
The story I remember most is about Lady Jane Grey. She was very young when she became queen, and her reign lasted only nine days. That’s why she is known as the Nine Days’ Queen.
She was imprisoned in the Tower of London after Mary I of England was proclaimed queen. Roughly seven months later she was executed, after her husband, on the same day. She was only 16 years old. What a tragic story.
Lunch at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
After the Tower of London, we walked to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for lunch. The name has nothing to do with the Cheshire Cat from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but I couldn’t help thinking about the grinning Cheshire Cat while sitting there.
The food was excellent. But somebody behind me (perhaps a big man) kept moving excitedly. I cannot blame him — the food was good and he seemed to be having a great time with his friends. However, my chair kept moving too, because we were basically sitting on the same bench with a back partition.
Still, it was a fun place to eat.
